Educational Trip to Shantiniketan

The pupils of Class XI B (Humanities) of Garden High School, along with two teachers, went for an educational trip to Shantiniketan for their Geography fieldwork in December 2025. They visited the manufacturing industries at Shantiniketan with the objective of understanding the industrial aspects of these small-scale factories as well as the lives of the people engaged in these industries.
On the first day the pupils observed the process of production of ‘gur’ from date palm sap. Sap collected by local boys from the palm trees was boiled, purified, cooled and then sold in containers. The group then visited the Ram Shyam Shantiniketan Batik workshop, where they learnt batik printing using the wax method. A special canting pen or a brush was used to reveal the designs. They also explored Kantha textiles where it takes months for a single piece of cloth to be embroidered and crafted by an artist. The pupils also visited the famous Sonajhuri Haat at Shantiniketan.
On the second day, the pupils and the teachers visited the Amar Kutir leather industry. They saw how large leather sheets were cut into various shapes, treated, dyed, stitched and printed into bags, bookmarks and many other useful products. The students carefully observed and learnt about each stage of production.
They also visited the Kopai river and the Khoai (a unique landscape of red laterite soil canyons). They toured the Viswa-Bharati University, its various departments and Rabindra Bhavan.
The trip was educational, instructive and interesting for the students. It was an enriching experience for all.
