{"id":537,"date":"2019-10-25T08:09:38","date_gmt":"2019-10-25T08:09:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gardenhighschool.in\/blog\/?p=537"},"modified":"2019-12-19T04:51:17","modified_gmt":"2019-12-19T04:51:17","slug":"the-history-exam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gardenhighschool.in\/blog\/the-history-exam\/","title":{"rendered":"The History Exam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-471\" src=\"https:\/\/gardenhighschool.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/ARUNAVA-BHATTACHARYA-X-C.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"93\" height=\"120\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Arunava Bhattacharya, Class X C (2019 &#8211; 20)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>This is the story of a History Exam, termed as the &#8216;Third World War&#8217; and the &#8216;Second Cold War.&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>Please pay solemn respect to the martyrs.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It was a hot and humid Friday<br \/>\nBut for that, we weren&#8217;t sweating,<br \/>\nTensed, sweaty faces were all around<br \/>\nBecause the History exam was waiting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Number of chapters? Only six<br \/>\nFour from History, two from Civics.<br \/>\nMarks of the exam? Fifty, no more<br \/>\nHow to mug it all up? No one was sure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Civics part seemed less, overall,<br \/>\nOnly two chapters were there,<br \/>\nBut in reality, it was way more than<br \/>\nThe four chapters of History elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Seeing that, different pupils had<br \/>\nTaken various approaches,<br \/>\nHowever, in the end they were left helpless<br \/>\nCrying, &#8216;Buenas noches!*<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8216;Where do we go? Which part should we study?<br \/>\nThe syllabus seems so immensely vast!<br \/>\nDo we first learn the Composition of Parliament?<br \/>\nOr how the Allies won World War II at last?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">These were our thoughts, as we<br \/>\nTried to thoroughly grease our minds,<br \/>\nSo that they work faster, and we<br \/>\nCould somehow memorise the lines.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The entire summer vacation? Ha!<br \/>\nWe were procrastinating then!<br \/>\nOnly when school reopened, were we<br \/>\nForced to study again;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The last day before the exam came,<br \/>\nIt was the eleventh hour,<br \/>\nAnd we were mugging up furiously<br \/>\nThe tale was turning more sour;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Studying the whole afternoon, the whole evening,<br \/>\nAnd then, even the whole night,<br \/>\nWe had mugged up all that we could manage<br \/>\nBy the time there was day&#8217;s light.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The scene I encountered in our class next day<br \/>\nWas one, extremely tense,<br \/>\nPeople were running, asking questions, reassuring,<br \/>\nThe nervous excitement was immense!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Finally the eight o&#8217;clock bell rang; it was<br \/>\nThe time, when an exam starts,<br \/>\nThe questions were coming towards us like<br \/>\nPointed, extremely sharp darts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The total time allotted for the exam<br \/>\nWas an hour and twenty minutes, exact,<br \/>\nWithin that time, we had to write all we could<br \/>\nBe it fiction, or proper fact.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Civics part came first; the marks<br \/>\nIt carried, were twenty full,<br \/>\nI felt I could get all twenty there<br \/>\nSo up my sleeves I pulled.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">When I happily finished the Civics part,<br \/>\nI suddenly heard a bell ringing;<br \/>\nI then realised that I still had<br \/>\nThirty marks left for answering,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And that time had taken to its wings<br \/>\nAnd flown steadily by;<br \/>\nForty minutes had passed, so I<br \/>\nSped up, and gave it my best try;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Writing at the speed of 100 words a minute<br \/>\nI littered the pages with herds of words,<br \/>\nLater which I found just capable<br \/>\nOf being checked, though it was blurred.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Never did I look up from my copy<br \/>\nNot even for one second;<br \/>\nTo complete the exam, I felt, I had<br \/>\nNot a single moment to lend.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The end of the exam was drawing closer<br \/>\nThe finishing line was in sight;<br \/>\nA few moments or so after I finished writing<br \/>\nThe final bell rang with all its might.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The post-exam mood was a confusion<br \/>\nOf all the possible emotions;<br \/>\nSome were happy, some were sad,<br \/>\nSome felt good, some felt bad.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Most of the people had finished the paper<br \/>\nBut many others, had not;<br \/>\nThey ran out of time, but to finish the paper<br \/>\nValiantly they had fought.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The general conception about the paper was<br \/>\nThat it was lengthy, but easy;<br \/>\nBut the paper had been enough to make<br \/>\nNearly everyone go dizzy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A friend of mine had sacrificed<br \/>\nHis entire sleep the night before,<br \/>\nSo dizzy and tired was he, that in<br \/>\nClass he began to peacefully snore!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Mixed emotions flew, but there<br \/>\nWas one emotion no one could cover,<br \/>\nWe were all heaving sighs of relief, that<br \/>\nAt last, the History Exam was over.<\/p>\n<p><strong>*Buenas noches is a Spanish phrase which means Goodnight.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arunava Bhattacharya, Class X C (2019 &#8211; 20) This is the story of a History Exam, termed as the &#8216;Third World War&#8217; and the &#8216;Second Cold War.&#8217; Please pay solemn respect to the martyrs.
