Astronomy Seminar and Solar Observation Programme
An astronomy seminar titled ‘Unveiling the Mysteries of the Universe through Telescopes’ was organized for students of Classes VIII and IX of Garden High School, with around 80 enthusiastic participants. The session was conducted by Professor Supratik Pal of the Indian Statistical Institute, who introduced students to the fundamentals of astronomy. He explained the types and working of telescopes and highlighted their role in major discoveries, making the session both informative and engaging.
The seminar was followed by a hands-on solar observation programme conducted by members of the Sky Watchers’ Association. Students observed the Sun safely using reflecting and refracting telescopes through direct viewing with proper filters and the projection method. They were able to view sunspots and understand solar surface features, with clear explanations provided by the experts. A practical demonstration on the handling and functioning of telescopes added to the learning experience.
The programme was highly successful in promoting scientific curiosity and experiential learning, leaving students inspired and eager to explore astronomy further.
