Waffle Cones

Waffle Cones

Srija Dasgupta, VIII B (2019 – 20)

“Hi! You won’t believe what happened…”

“What?”

“Well… WAIT! You don’t sound like my mom!”

It was a man’s voice and even though the doctors kept asking her not to be too restless due to her terminal illness, she got off her bed and screamed her lungs out.

“Dad! Mom just replied to my text! Can you believe it?”

“Cut it out, Gwen. Mom passed away, okay?”

Gwen trailed off as her father looked at her indignantly. Sighing, she went back to her room and slamming the door, she texted the number she thought was her mom’s.

Mom, everything seems to be going wrong. I think I might go crazy without you. Please come back.

A few minutes later, she received a text from the other side.

Look outside, it’s snowing. They say snowflakes are kisses from Heaven. Now quit being melancholic and get yourself warm. How about some waffle cones?

Gwen almost jumped in excitement. If there was one thing in the world that she loved more than her mom, it was having waffle cones with ice cream.

“I won’t have it unless you are here, though. I want you to bring me the waffle cones that you used to make.”, she texted, but got nothing more than silence as the answer.

“Miss Anderson?”

Gwen came back to her senses, owing to the nurse having shaken her continuously.

“There’s a package for you, Miss Anderson. It just arrived.”

“Me? I’m sure you’re mistaken. Who would…?”

The nurse handed her a package and left the room. Gwen tore the wrapper as quickly as she could and what she saw was beyond magical.

Inside, there were numerous waffle cones with ice cream and a short note:

I don’t know if it is as good as your Mom’s, but I tried. Consider it an apology gift for stealing all the texts that were meant for your mom. Now, get well soon.
